This study evaluated the extent to which aspects of an Africentric value orientation and ethnic identity predicted sexual behavior, substance use and psychopathology among 94 African American adolescent girls (ages 12 - 17) seeking outpatient psychiatric services. The study was cross sectional in design, and utilized self-report measures. The study examined if Africentric values (Belgrave, 1997), ethnic identity (Phinney, 1992), "focusing on the positive" (Folkman & Lazarus, 1985), and "spiritual-centered coping" (Utsey et al., 2000) were associated with the risk behavior outcomes of sexual behavior, substance use and psychopathology. The study controlled for SES and AIDS knowledge when examining sexual behavior, and examined SES as a covariate for the other outcome variables.

520 $a Using regression techniques, the current study did not replicate findings from previous studies regarding the associations between Africentric values and ethnic identity on adolescent psychosocial outcomes. Partial support was found for one hypothesis: a higher component of ethnic identity (ethnic identity search) was associated with decreased odds of sexual debut, beyond the effects of SES and AIDS knowledge. Another finding was that spiritual-centered coping accounted for a significant proportion of variance in internalizing psychopathology, after covarying out SES. Also, a higher score on the knowledge of HIV prevention was associated with increased odds of sexual debut in all regression equations. The discussion enumerates how the study's results compare with findings from previous studies. Furthermore, the study's limitations are detailed. Recommendations which could help advance the study of Africentrism in different populations are rendered.
