During the last decades of the twentieth century an intensified interest in the critical thinking (CT) abilities of college students emerged. The United States Congress included increasing college students' CT abilities as a goal in the Goals 2000: Educate America Act. In 1997, an optometry school in the southeastern United States adopted a strategic plan for the college to configure its educational program to encourage the development of students' critical thinking skills.

Critical thinking has had different definitions in the literature. Different authors have considered different aspects of CT. This study used a CT framework developed in a Delphi study under the auspices of the American Philosophical Association. In that model, critical thinking ability may be classified into CT skills and CT disposition.

The purpose of this study was to find out if a difference existed in critical thinking skills and disposition between academic levels and gender of students at an optometry school. The study also investigated whether student demographics had an association with CT attributes and whether CT attributes had a correlation with Optometry Admission Test (OAT) scores.

Two CT measuring instruments, the California Critical Thinking Skills Test and the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory, were administered to first-year and third-year optometry students. Subjects also answered an investigator-generated demographic questionnaire.

Results of the study showed no significant main effect for academic class level or gender on CT skills and disposition for students at the optometry school. A statistically significant difference was found for CT disposition between academic class levels for CT disposition total scores and three scale scores. Third-year subjects had lower CT disposition than first-year subjects. These statistically significant differences should be interpreted cautiously because the multivariate test is not significant. Student demographics were not associated with CT. Student CT could not be predicted from OAT scores because of low or no correlations of OAT scores and total CT skills and disposition scores.
