Thesis (M.S.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2007.
The Idaho-Nevada-California (INC) experiment utilized commercial mine blasts and local earthquakes, as well as a dense array of portable seismographs to complete a 600 km-long seismic refraction transect across northern Nevada and the central Sierra Nevada. Blasts at Barrick GoldStrike mine showed a Pg-Pn cross-over distance of 126 km to the southwest. First arrival time picks from two Barrick GoldStrike mine blasts and a magnitude 2.8 earthquake in Paso Robles, California were inverted using a tomographic optimization method. The preferred model shows that the central Sierra Nevada has a 43 +/- 2 km-thick crustal root centered 40 km west of the Sierra topographic crest. In conjunction with other geophysical and geologic work in the Sierra, including the 2002 Northern Walker Lane experiment, the INC results concur that the crustal root has delaminated in the central Sierra during the Cenozoic.Subjects--Topical Terms:
