Thesis (Ph.D.)--Rutgers The State University of New Jersey - Newark, 2007.
In Black Picket Fences, Pattillo-McCoy (1999) contends that the influences on and outcomes for African American middle class youth can be as tenuous as they are for poor Black youth. In other words, class status does not matter all that much, according to Pattillo-McCoy. This conclusion runs counter to a strong tradition in criminological theory that class and crime are inversely related.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In addition, most criminal justice literature on African Americans focuses on poor Blacks. However, recent U.S. Census data show that a sizeable proportion of African Americans have achieved middle class status. Despite this fact, little interest has been shown in comparing rates of serious crime across socio-economically and ecologically diverse Black communities. While some recent work (e.g., Conley, 1999; Oliver and Shapiro, 1995; Pattillo-McCoy, 1999) has focused on the African American middle class, crime has not been the main focus of this research.

Pattillo-McCoy's (1999) findings were based on a qualitative study of one neighborhood. This dissertation tested her hypothesis (Ho)---that little to no difference in antisocial and delinquent behavior exists between poor versus middle class Black youth because of similar neighborhood influences---using data from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH). Analysis of variance, and OLS and logistic regression, were among the methods used to test the hypothesis.

Results from multivariate analyses show that middle class Black youth emerge as a group distinct from their poor and affluent peers, counter to Pattillo-McCoy's (1999) thesis. Parenting behavior---particularly positive parenting (e.g., helping with homework, praising the child)---has the most meaningful impact on Black youth from middle class families. That parenting outweighs neighborhood variables in increasing Delinquency among Black middle class youth contradicts the theory of Pattillo-McCoy (1999) and supports the findings of others (e.g., Duncan and Brooks-Gunn, 1997).

When the analyses focused on the dichotomous dependent variable, Police Trouble Ever, Youth Age and Marital Disruption emerged as significant, positive predictors among Black, White, and All Races youth. The significance of the parents' Marital Disruption supports other research that has found a delinquency-divorce/broken home relationship (e.g., Thornberry, Smith, Rivera et al., 1999).
