One of the more influential theorists in the fields of pastoral care and pastoral leadership is a psychiatrist, Murray Bowen. His family systems theory forms part of the core of the marriage and family therapy movement of the 1950s and 1960s. Recently professional clergy, pastoral counselors, and seminary professors have discovered Bowen's work to be a useful tool for predicting and describing human behavior, understanding the inner workings of churches, and clarifying vocational identity.

The thesis of this dissertation is that Murray Bowen's Family Systems Theory and H. Richard Niebuhr's theology share conceptual similarities that describe human experience in terms of responsibility, self, and systemic thinking. The idea of conceptual similarities asserts that different disciplines share similar notions about a common experience or object that translate into overlapping descriptions or understandings of reality. Niebuhr's understanding of responsibility, his idea of a center of value in an individual or group's value system, and his definition of love present a theological component to the discussion. Bowen's concept of differentiation of self as an act of responsible behavior, his description of the self as one part of an emotional system, and his use of systemic thinking in understanding biological life provide the psychological dimension for this dialogue. Two case studies of clergy experiences in congregational settings ground this conversation in practice and yield a helpful way of thinking theologically about the interaction of family systems theories with the practices of the church and the functions of the local church minister. Chapter one introduces the thesis, methodology and limitations of the dissertation. Douglas F. Ottati's theological method of integrity and intelligibility guide the dialogue. Chapter two explicates Bowen Theory. Chapter three explicates Niebuhr's theology. Chapter four examines the dissimilarities of Bowen and Niebuhr in terms of differing centers of value and moral reasoning. Chapter five looks at conceptual similarities of these two theorists. Chapter six examines future research possibilities.
