520 $a The purpose of this study was to determine if gender role identity, parental influence, role strain and occupational counseling are factors in a male's decision to choose nursing as a career.
520 $a Male nurses and Cal Trans employees were paired based upon the demographics of age, gender, and level of education. Also, male nurses and Stanford University students were paired on the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI). The sample consisted of one hundred respondents, fifty male nurses and fifty Cal Trans employees. Stanford University students were used as the comparison group for the BSRI.
520 $a A questionnaire containing thirteen statements was constructed to measure parental influence, perceived "role strain" and occupational/guidance counseling influence on a male considering nursing as a career. The Bem Sex Role Inventory was used to measure gender role attitudes of male nurses in comparison with Stanford university students.
