The impetus for this study lay in the disparity between the demand for nurses and the growing need to involve the nursing community in recruiting others to nursing practice. A modified replication with extension of the pilot study done by Grossman, Arnold, Sullivan, Cameron, and Munro (1989) was undertaken. Based on the theory of occupational choice a convenience sample of ninth grade male and female students was surveyed to determine their perceptions of nursing as a career, the presence of a nurse role model, and support for selection of a nursing career. No relationship was demonstrated between total scores of students' perception of nursing and consideration of a nursing career. However, a relationship was demonstrated with the presence of a role model, sex of the respondent, parental support and consideration of a nursing career.Subjects--Topical Terms:
