Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Phoenix, 2007.
The nonexperimental, qualitative, historical study discussed in this dissertation examined the transferable crisis leadership styles of Kenesaw M. Landis and A. Bartlett Giamatti, two of nine commissioners in Major League Baseball (MLB) history. Interviews with the four living current and former MLB commissioners that explored Landis' and Giamatti's behaviors were analyzed using the QSR NVivo 6.0 software. The results of this study revealed the following: (a) historical influences affect organizational outcomes; (b) accomplishments and the passage of time affect organizational memory; (c) leaders should consider past lessons when confronted with change; (d) behavioral patterns, cultural factors, or past lessons should affect responses to controversy; (e) the MLB commissioner's attributes are transferable to other leaders; and (f) leaders who draw from various approaches within the scope of transformational leadership are sometimes more successful than leaders who use a single approach.
