This exploratory study is an investigation of the key factors that activated self-organization in two uniquely different organizational systems. Self-organization is a transformational process that leads to the structural reorganization of a system. An instrumental case study methodology was employed to access underlying motivators of this complex social phenomenon.

Two factors emerged as triggers for self-organization in this study: (a) A less than favorable public image and (b) a perceived obstruction to the pursuit of the system's mission. This finding implies that since 2 out of 3 of an organization's core elements emerged as key factors, it can be concluded that self-organization in organizational systems is triggered by issues relating to 1 or more of the organization's core elements: identity, values, or mission.
