Thesis (Ed.D.)--Spalding University, 1998.
The purpose of this exploratory study was to evaluate a psychoeducational group for parents utilizing an experiential format. The objectives were to describe and evaluate the process, outcome, and process-outcome of a parent support and education group, based on Bloch's (1975) quality control model. Current literature demonstrates a disparaging lack of research data examining the effectiveness of parental support and education in the context of group process. The significance of this area of research lies in the need to provide children with an optimal nurturing environment where they may grow to be healthy adults. In this exploratory evaluation, study subjects (N = 17), limited to the number available in Louisville, KY during the study period, were parents who voluntarily signed up for this series of four one hour parenting education classes. The parents' ages ranged from 26-38. Sixteen of the subjects were female and one was male. Data were collected on a pretest/posttest design at the first and fourth sessions. All subjects completed self-report questionnaires. For the purpose of this study, subjects were placed into benefited most/least groups based on the variable of "benefit." Benefit is defined as having increased posttest scores in both self-esteem and parenting competence. Changes in outcomes (self-esteem and perceived parenting competence) are compared for differences in process and group member characteristics. Summarily, data revealed that for this particular study, there was a significant increase in posttest self-esteem and parenting competence for the overall group. There was not a significant difference in those that benefited most/least. However, the absence of randomization and relatively small sample size may limit the generalizability of the findings. Replication of this study is encouraged along with suggestions for future research.
