Director: Margaret A. Farley.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2001.
Recent advances in genetic and reproductive technologies could dramatically increase human control over the processes of procreation. Although we are nowhere near total genetic control over our offspring, we as a society can begin to imagine the day when couples could directly preselect certain genetic characteristics of their children, before those children are even conceived. This dissertation seeks to evaluate this prospect from both feminist and Christian standpoints, especially with respect to the limits that should be placed upon individual procreative liberty.

The dissertation first locates technologies of genetic manipulation within a scientific and moral landscape, offering a scientific summary of genetic manipulation and a brief outlining of the major ethical issues it raises. It then delineates several aspects of the sociohistorical context of genetic manipulation, including both contemporary trends toward perfectionism (vis-à-vis our children) and the historical promotion of eugenic thought and practices within Western society.

A classically liberal ethical analysis of genetic manipulation, centered on the norm of procreative liberty, is then presented, inspected, and critiqued, from the standpoint of feminist theory on the one hand, and of Christian tradition on the other. Even while affirming the value of procreative liberty, the best insights of feminism place procreative liberty into the larger framework of human well-being. Similarly, Christian analysis questions the nearly unlimited value of procreative liberty that liberal analyses often promote, instead seeking to discern and take greater account of divine intent with respect to our use of these technologies.

Drawing upon these two sources of insight, the dissertation develops and advances its own normative portrait of human flourishing, one by which we may ethically evaluate various forms of genetic manipulation. Using this portrait, it offers recommendations about three specific forms of preconceptive genetic manipulation: for the prevention of cystic fibrosis, for the enhancement of memory, and for sex preselection. It is concluded that genetic manipulation to Prevent cystic fibrosis (and other serious diseases) should be accepted; that the genetic enhancement of memory should in most cases be rejected; and that sex preselection should be approached with extreme caution with a bias toward discouragement.
