Thesis (M.A.)--Duquesne University, 2001.
Statistics indicate that, despite transformation of social thought and expansion of opportunities for women in the labor market in the past several decades, women as workers and professionals have not achieved total integration in the workforce and the status of equality with men. This thesis studies women's status in the labor market and identifies reasons for barriers to their advancement in career. It examines the issue of women's employment in conjunction with the related career theory. Later, it explores career theory literature to study theories that shed light on women's employment situation and builds a taxonomy around common themes.

The thesis begins with a general discussion about the meaning of the term “career.” The discussion is then narrowed to women's careers specifically. An analysis of various relevant factors leads to the discussion of forces that tend to raise women's status to total equality and those that tend to sustain gender disparity in the labor market. Later in the thesis, the discussion about the meaning of the term “career” resurfaces in an attempt to comprehend whether or not organizations take into account women's perspectives and career needs when they formulate policies that impact employees' careers. Knowing the relationship between organizational policies and women's career advancement or hindrance is helpful in suggesting any organizational change or redirection of career theory to incorporate new needs that have risen with women's greater participation in the labor market in the recent decades.
