Utilizing the qualitative method, the researcher compared the perceptions of young adult mothers who were raised by full-time working mothers with those who were raised by full-time homemakers. From the self psychological perspective, the researcher examined the impact of the mothers' work status on the daughters' sense of self and daughters' professional decisions during motherhood. The researcher interviewed twelve women between the ages of 28 and 35 who fit the criteria for four groups in accordance with the work status of the mother/daughter combination.

Responses from the entire sample indicated the mothers' influence on both the daughters' sense of self and work decisions during motherhood, though degree of impact varied among participants. All participants identified shifts in their relationships with their mothers, and part-time work as the ideal arrangement. All daughters of working mothers had negative feelings toward mothers' work as children, though appreciation increased with age. Working daughters revealed internal conflict about their decisions to work, work as enhancing motherhood, and positive perceptions and value of non-maternal day care arrangements. These perceptions contrasted the beliefs of the homemaker daughters who support the exclusivity of maternal care, oppose day care arrangements, and do not consider their work to have been central to their sense of self. Many daughters pursued fathers' profession, while none pursued that of mother.
