Thesis (M.S.W.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2001.
Prior research has suggested a link between media portrayals of women, poor body image, and disordered eating. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the media's promotion of a thinness ideal and body image among 65 female college students at California State University, Long Beach. Results revealed that the media has an impact on female college students' perceptions of body image and dieting and exercise behaviors. There were significant positive relationships between the media, body image, and dieting and exercise behaviors. However, there were no significant ethnic or socioeconomic differences in how women perceived the media, body image, and dieting and exercise behaviors. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
