The purpose of this etic/emic comparative research study was to compare the learning and performance styles of three cross-cultural populations (i.e., Puerto Rico, Colombia, USA) working for a global corporate organization. In addition, a second purpose was to investigate the relationships among culture, cultural values, learner's preferred learning style, and learner's preferred learning/working environment in a corporate context. This empirical study was carried out among members of various cultural groups to identify cultural uniqueness vs. cultural universality. The latter is known in cross-cultural research as an etic/emic comparative research study.

Two surveys (1) the Productivity Environmental Preference Survey (PEPS) developed by Rita Dunn, Kenneth Dunn & Gary Price; and (2) the Values Survey Module 1994 developed by Geert Hofstede were used to yield culture specific information to tap particular etic and emic aspects of preferred learning style and preferred learning/working environment.

The sample in this study came from Citibank, which identified twenty-five participants in USA, twenty-two participants in Puerto Rico, and twenty-nine in Colombia, for a total sample of seventy-six subjects. Selected subjects were natives from each country (i.e., born and raised). United States natives had no Hispanic/Latino heritage.

Findings from this research study indicate that there is a relationship between culture and preference for a particular learning/productivity style. This study also found evidence for a most preferred learning/training technique for Puerto Rican, Colombian, and USA natives. This evidence suggests that subjects from Colombia and Puerto Rico prefer to be trained using an Experiential training technique, specifically Round Robin. Subjects from USA also prefer to be trained using an Experiential technique, but via Role Play.

Further, correlation results revealed relationships between several learning/productivity environment characteristics and national country cultural characteristics. For instance, significant relationships were found between Power Distance and Design, Tactile, Kinesthetic, and Requires Intake; Uncertainty Avoidance and Formal/Informal Design, Tactile Preferences, Auditory, and Visual; and Individualism and Visual, Requires Intake, and Late Morning.
