The primary purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two different data input devices (mouse versus MIDI keyboard) with a music education computer assisted instructional (CAI) program on the achievement of nonmusic majors enrolled in a college level music fundamentals class. The study also sought to ascertain the attitudes and reactions of the students toward the use of the CAI program (i.e., Music Ace 1™).

Two groups of students (MIDI versus Virtual) completed 16 sessions from Music Ace for one semester. The MIDI group used a MIDI keyboard while the Virtual group used a virtual keyboard with a computer mouse. Dependent variables were time spent and game scores for each Music Ace session, and researcher designed keyboard and written tests.

Participants were assigned to the MIDI (n = 25) or Virtual group (n = 26), based on their class sections. A written survey and pretest were administered at the beginning of the semester. Students were evaluated weekly by the CAI program, and by means of two keyboard tests and written posttests throughout the semester. All students received the same materials and lectures.

Results yielded no significant differences in time or game scores between groups in all but one session of Music Ace. There were also no significant differences between groups on the keyboard or written posttests. The results, however, did demonstrate a significant improvement in student achievement between pre- and posttests. Although not significant, the Virtual group was consistently faster and more accurate on most of the tests. The MIDI group rated the Music Ace games as being significantly more difficult in two of the 16 sessions.

This study suggests that using the MIDI keyboard with Music Ace provides no advantage in terms of students' achievement. Additionally, the CAI software seemed to have a significant positive impact on students' achievement as demonstrated by the written posttest results. However, students did not generally view the CAI program very positively because of the fast pace and difficulty level of the games.
