The purpose of this study was to uncover the meaning that persons give to communication in the family context. Sixteen females and three males, ages 18-45, enrolled in a college course in family communication were the participants. The college was located in a suburb of a major metropolitan area. Participants wrote weekly journal entries and were interviewed about their family communication experiences. Journal entries and verbatim transcripts of all interviews were analyzed for themes.

For the participants in this study, family communication generally meant communicating with one other family member, most often a parent or sibling. Each dyadic exchange was reported to have its own unique rules. Communication with parents was of paramount importance. A majority of the participants reported greater ease in communicating with one parent compared to the other. Various adjectives were used to categorize the communication that occurred during family communication exchanges, ranging from "open" to "unhealthy."

The ease or difficulty experienced when communicating with family members was reported to be dependent upon various influences: perception of personality similarities or differences, presence or absence of shared interests, the communication style of the persons involved, family image, family alliances, personal or family crises such as parental divorce, alcohol use by one or more family members, family lifestyle, passage of time, proximity, and the addition of new members into the family.

All participants desired more open communication with one or more family members and more openness among the entire family during their limited time together. Many based their goals for change on observation of others' families or were modeling it after the type of communication they had experienced in other contexts, such as at work or in close friendships. Considerable agreement emerged regarding the ways in which the participants thought they could foster more open communication in their families.
