Rondinone, Peter J.
Autobiography of a learner: A memoir and a metatext.
- 393 p.
Chair: John Mayher.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2002.
This study focuses on the process and analysis of autobiographical writing. To accomplish its goals, two interrelated tasks were completed. First, this researcher wrote a memoir about how he struggled to become a college-educated person despite growing up in an impoverished South Bronx home and community that did not aspire to academic success. Then using this memoir as his primary text the researcher investigated a wide range of scholars and critical texts on the art of memoir and issues related to the memoir's education theme to fashion a self-study—a metatext. The metatext explores such topics as the politics of memoir, the psychology of memoir, the inter-textuality of memoir, as well as such education themes as the sociology and politics of shifting social class allegiances including linguistic ones. In the end, the self-study reflects on what this researcher, an educator himself, has learned about classroom practices that involve working with students from similarly non-academic backgrounds.
