This study tested an intervention designed to improve the computer training performance of older adults by enhancing their fluid intellectual capability prior to computer training. It also examined individual difference characteristics which impact on the computer training performance of older adults.

Previous research indicates that older adults have significantly more difficulty learning computer-based applications relative to younger adults, that fluid intelligences--logical reasoning ability and spatial orientation--predict computer training and computer-based work performance, and that these two specific cognitive abilities decline with age. Compelling research furthermore indicates that performance by older adults on measures of fluid intelligence can be significantly improved with only a few hours of practice and training. Therefore, it was hypothesized that cognitive practice and training, prior to computer training, would improve the computer training performance of older adults, relative to those without similar cognitive practice and training.

Sixty adults between the ages of 52 and 87 participated in this study approximately half of which were assigned to an experimental group that received approximately six hours of logical reasoning and spatial ability training. The other participants were assigned to a control group which participated in a 2 1/2 hour training session on computer work styles utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Results indicated that the cognitive ability training significantly improved the spatial ability performance of the experimental group relative to the control group, but did not significantly enhance the experimental group participants' logical reasoning ability relative to the control group. Furthermore, participation in the cognitive ability training prior to the computer training did not lead to enhanced computer training performance of the experimental group participants, as measured by a post-training test comprised of 26 hands-on training tasks.

Regression analyses indicated that five specific individual difference characteristics accounted for a significant amount of unique variance in the computer training performance of the older adult participants in this study: previous computer experience, trainee age, trainee logical reasoning ability, the number of visits trainees' made to individual practice sessions at the training facility, and trainees' expectancy of computer training success.
