The problem. The purpose of this study was to compare the computer skills needed by business administration graduates as perceived by colleges and universities in Indiana offering a baccalaureate degree in business administration, and as perceived by the top 100 revenue producing companies in Indiana as ranked by the Indiana Business Magazine.

The purpose of this study was to compare the computer skills needed by business administration graduates as perceived by colleges and universities in Indiana offering a baccalaureate degree in business administration, and as perceived by the top 100 revenue producing companies in Indiana as ranked by the Indiana Business Magazine.
520 $a The method. The instruments used for this study were adapted from those used by Lifer (1992) and Carter (1988). One-hundred questionnaire packets were mailed to every member of the business population. Thirty-eight questionnaire packets were mailed to every member of the education population.
520 $a Results. (1) The computer skills perceived as necessary by Indiana businesses did not match those perceived as necessary by Indiana colleges/universities. However, both populations agreed that the use of word processing software and the use of spreadsheet software were the most necessary computer skills. (2) The amount of importance placed on different application software as perceived by Indiana businesses was different from that as perceived by Indiana colleges/universities, However, both populations agreed that word processing software and spreadsheet software were the most important. (3) Indiana businesses tended to use a variety of hardware configurations whereas Indiana colleges/universities tended to use just the microcomputer in the classroom. (4) The size of the Indiana business was not related to the amount of importance placed on different computer skills. (5) The enrollment of the Indiana college/university was related to the amount of importance placed on one computer skill, "use software to solve problems." The positive relationship indicated that as the enrollment increased so did the tendency to rate the computer skill higher. (6) Indiana businesses considered computer literacy as the most important computer competency, followed by computer applications and computer programming. Indiana colleges/universities considered computer applications as the most important, followed by computer literacy and computer programming. (7) Indiana businesses indicated that "applying computer technology" was the area in which business graduates were the weakest. Indiana colleges/universities identified "computer applications" as the weakest area. (8) Both Indiana colleges/universities and Indiana businesses indicated that "computer applications" was the area in which business graduates were the strongest.
