This study examines the relationship between a firm's competitive strategy and its information system design. The purpose of the study is to determine whether firms design the functionality of their information systems to enable their chosen strategy, and if so, whether there is an enabling effect of the information system on the competitive strategy. Empirical data on web site functionality was collected from 160 national banks and matched with competitive strategy proxies from regulatory filings of financial statements. The number of links to a firm's web site was used to measure the performance effect of the fit between the information system and its chosen strategy.

520 $a Results suggest that firms pursuing a differentiation strategy utilize more web features, particularly web features for advanced functionality, which provide new on-line banking services to customers. The effect of these strategy enabling web features also result in higher levels of web site effectiveness. Thus, the results suggest that firms implement web features to support their competitive strategy, which results in a direct performance impact on the number of web links.
520 $a This study contributes to the literature by providing evidence of an association between the design of a firm's information system and its competitive strategy. Additionally, this study is an explicit test of the information processing model of organization design. While prior strategic information systems research suggests that the design of an information system enables strategy, this study directly tests the presence of this relationship and examines a performance outcome of the enabling effect.
