The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a decrease in the length of the golf backswing on club head velocity (CHV) at ball impact. Twenty-four golfers with long backswings were video taped before and after instruction from PGA Master professional Don Trahan. Data was processed using the Ariel Performance Analysis System. Dependent t tests were run on paired values of CHV and standard deviation of CHV at ball impact, and club shaft angle and position at the end of the backswing. The subjects significantly shortened travel and changed the planar orientation of the club shaft at the end of the backswing. The results showed a significant decrease in the standard deviation of CHV and no significant difference in the value of CHV at ball impact. Based on these results the backswing can be shortened approximately 20% without a loss in CHV at ball impact.
