Thesis (D.P.A.)--The University of Alabama, 2002.
The dissertation surveyed attitudes of residents in Alabama toward four different potential educational voucher systems. The research question investigated was: What kinds of voucher programs seem most popular to the residents of Alabama and why? The four voucher systems investigated included using vouchers at public schools, using vouchers at private schools, vouchers at religious schools, and vouchers at schools anywhere in the state. These four potential voucher programs formed the dependent variables in regression models that determined their relationship with a series of independent variables. The survey showed that the two most popular voucher systems were using vouchers at public schools and at schools anywhere in the state. The regression models showed that allocating vouchers based on parental need was a significant statistical contributor in Model One, voucher use at public schools, and Model Four, voucher use at religious schools. Additionally, identification as a Republican was a significant predictor of support for vouchers at private schools and identification as a Democrat was a significant predictor for lack of support for vouchers at religious schools. Results of the survey and regression were consistent with the literature that suggested allocating vouchers based on the financial need of parents was important in formulating a voucher program.
