The purpose of this work is to develop a successful method for a static analysis of thin and thick plates with crack-like discontinuities. The structural bending analysis with the geometrical discontinuities has been an important subject during the past decade due to catastrophic failures. Numerous efforts have been devoted to developing advanced methods, and to solve the complex plate bending problems. However, solutions still remain very limited in a simple case due to the complexity of the analysis.

The indirect Boundary Element Method (IBEM) is employed to solve complex engineering problems. The indirect BEM formulations are constructed based upon Kirchhoff and Reissner-plate bending theories for the linear stress analysis of moderately thin and thick plate with singularities in the form of edge or interior discontinuities, such as split-like openings or cracks, etc. The vectors of the unknown source functions Ξ<italic><sub>i</sub></italic> are introduced and the fundamental solutions <italic>G<sub>ik</sub></italic> of the governing differential equations of the Kirchhoff and Reissner-plate theory are represented by using the generalized Fourier transform method. A numerical algorithm is developed to solve the boundary integral equations for the unknown source functions Φ<italic><sub>k</sub></italic>. Special care is focused on the representation and evaluation of singular and hyper-singular integrals that occur in the boundary integral equations. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the method and demonstrate its advantages.
