A product platform is a set of common components, modules or parts from which a stream of derivative products can be created. The development of a theory and method for designing product platforms that facilitates the production of customized products is presented in this dissertation. The proposed theory and method is based on the articulation of the design of platforms for customizable products as a problem of optimization of access in a geometric space. Hierarchic systems theory and constructal theory are the foundation for developing three theoretic principles and a method based on dynamic programming that supports the efficacious solution of this access problem.
