In factor analyses of self-report items related to impulsivity, at least two factors, haste and disinhibition, tend to be discernable. In this study, four neuropsychological tests related to impulsivity (Stroop Color-Word Test (SCWT), Trailmaking Test (TMT), Porteus Maze Test (PMT), and Tower of London (TOL)) were assessed for reliability and convergent and discriminant validity for discerning separable factors of haste (speed of response) and disinhibition (number of errors made). Two hundred healthy undergraduates completed a neuropsychological battery containing these measures and potential covariates (WAIS-R Information, WAIS-R Picture Completion, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-III, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Likert-scale ratings of enjoyment of the testing protocol). Haste was found to be reliable within SCWT, PMT, and TOL measures, while disinhibition was inadequately reliable. Weak convergent validity existed for the haste variables with the exception of latency scores on the TOL. Neither haste nor disinhibition demonstrated convergent validity. A factor analysis revealed two factors. One factor was composed of haste on SCWT and TMT and disinhibition on the TMT Part B. The other factor was composed of haste on the PMT and TOL and disinhibition on the TOL. The two factors illustrate the poor discriminant validity of haste and disinhibition on these measures as errors and speed are confounded. Age, intelligence, anxiety, and enjoyment of the testing had minimal relationships to the performance measures of haste and disinhibition. Restriction of range of the error scores on these neuropsychological measures is offered as one explanation for the poor reliability and validity of these measures in healthy adults.
