The intent of this study was to clarify the construct of impulsivity by examining the correlations between measures of self-control and mental control. Strong correlations would suggest that the concepts of mental control and self-control are redundant and should be collapsed into one construct. Weak correlations would suggest that self-control and mental control are distinct constructs.

Personality researchers hypothesize that self-control will affect behavior across time, largely in terms of emotional responses and interpersonal relationships. Barratt and Eysenck are two researchers who have developed self-report questionnaires that assess the level of an individual's self-control.

Neuropsychologists typically have assessed mental control using cognitive performance limited to short time periods, a markedly different methodology than that used by personality researchers. Poor mental control results in impatience and impulsive behavior, leading to poor task performance and is marked by a lack of planning, motor coordination, or behavior control. Neuropsychologists have developed a variety of neuropsychological tests, such as the Stroop and time perception procedures, to measure the broad areas of cognitive functioning influenced by mental control.

A multitrait-multimethod design was utilized to provide a framework for the relationship between self-control and mental control. Three specific issues of reliability, convergent validity, and divergent validity were examined. Self-report questionnaires and cognitive performance tasks (The Eysenck Impulsiveness Questionnaire, Version Seven $(I\sb7),$ the Barratt Impulsivity Scale, Version Eleven (BIS-11), the Stroop procedure Victoria version, and a time perception task) were used to measure four different traits (empathy, self-control, mental control, and color recognition) among women participants (N = 68). The Empathy (Emp) variable of the Eysenck's Impulsivity Questionnaire
$i
\sb7$ and the Stroop color dot (Stroop-D) variable were used to measure traits not related to self-control or mental control.

The results suggest that there are important differences between the neuropsychological and personality concepts of self-control and mental control. The correlations among self-control and mental control variables tended to be markedly low suggesting that self-control and mental control are different traits and that impulsivity is a multidimensional construct. A multidimensional construct of impulsivity was proposed in this study and was supported by the results.
