Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Albany, 1996.
This dissertation has focused on the rural-urban inequality in contemporary China. For about a half century, Chinese society has been split into two caste-like social classes--the urban and rural. As a result, the distributions of income, power, social prestige and privilege between these two classes have been substantially unequal.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In chapter 2 I have analyzed the institutional mechanism behind urban-rural dichotomy-inequality in today's China. I have explained how China's urban-rural dichotomy was possible from 1949 to 1980, and why a free market has not broken through the urban-rural barrier in the current post-socialism transition. Chapter 3 has reestablished new estimates of the economic inequality between the two classes by identifying the non-cash incomes enjoyed by the urban class. I have also explained that the urban group has received more benefits from the current transition than its rural counterpart. This finding is contrary to that of current studies. Chapter 4 focuses on estimates of urban-rural mobility. The final chapter consists of a historical discussion, which explains why the China's Communist regime has adopted the stern social policy of urban-rural dichotomy in contemporary China.
