Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Psychology, 1994.
According to Bowlby's attachment theory humankind has a strong need to develop affectional bonds with significant others and will experience emotional distress when these ties are disrupted. Based on Bowlby's concept of attachment, Ainsworth has identified three principal patterns of attachment, the secure, the ambivalent, and the avoidant attachment. People's early attachment experiences may have an impact in determining their later capacity to make affectional bonds such as their subsequent marital interactions. This study involved a qualitative analysis designed to identify the characteristics of overseas born Chinese couples' early attachment experiences and their subsequent marital interaction. Twenty purposively selected couples were interviewed. Six consistent marital patterns, the secure/secure, the ambivalent/ambivalent, the avoidant/avoidant, the secure/ambivalent, the secure/avoidant, and the ambivalent/avoidant, were identified. The implications of each of these six marital patterns were carefully interpreted with cultural consideration. Implications of the findings for parent-child relationships, marital interactions, clinical population, and intervention strategy were discussed. Theological integration and ministerial implications were reviewed.Subjects--Topical Terms:
