The mechanism underlying the normal range of ages in which most individuals marry and become parents is not only an essential element in population dynamics, but also a powerful force in shaping social structures and social institutions. The timing of individuals' matrimony as well as reproductive sequence is, itself, affected by factors from major domains of society.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Using data from China's In-depth Fertility Surveys, this study attempts to identify major factors contributing to the variabilities of the timing of marriage and first childbirth of women in contemporary China. Based on previous research findings, a conceptual framework consisting of a set of core hypotheses is formulated and tested with the data sets. Special attention is given to highlighting the impact of distinctive historical periods and contrasting the unique patterns in rural and urban regions.

Three different but related statistical methods are utilized in the analyses: life table, regression, and event history analysis. Univariate and multivariate regressions are adopted to analyze the data for both exploration and explanation of the marriage dimension, event history analyses are conducted to avoid biased results due to observation censoring of the fertility dimension, while the life table technique is used to provide initial heuristic orientations of both dimensions.

Major findings of data analyses are largely supportive of the central hypotheses. Personal achievements, such as higher level of education, being formally employed, and holding a cadre rank, are positively associated with women's timing of marriage and fertility; traditional values and norms, as reflected in arranged marriage, betrothal experience, and extended family structure, contribute to an earlier timing; other factors, e.g., parents' education, family housing conditions, and age discrepancy between husband and wife also, to varying degrees, exert influences on the dependent variables, contingent upon the specific period and locality. The period effect, reflecting the government's efforts in family planning and population control, is particularly prominent in the more recent years, while the regional effect associated with the rural/urban divergence in living standards, life style, ideology, social organization, and the Party's relevant policies, has been continuously getting stronger in the whole duration of observation.
