- 271 p.
Mentor: Ray S. Anderson.
Thesis (D.Min.)--Fuller Theological Seminary, Doctor of Ministry Program, 1992.
God is unity in diversity, existing eternally in perfect unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. By his personhood, he reveals the beauty of oneness amid personal differences. Through his work throughout the ages, beginning with creation and ending with the consummation, the theme continues. Even in the New Testament Church, God's will of reconciling everything to himself is evident from the calling of the first disciple to the preaching of the gospel to the ends of the world. The theological foundation for the ministry of the San Jose Chinese Alliance Church is thus laid.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The church's ministry model is not only in response to God's person and work, it is also an adaptation to the needs of the Chinese community which is complex and diverse. From the obvious cultural difference between the American and the Overseas born Chinese to the further differentiation of the different generations along the acculturation continuum, great diversities exist in this unique community. Even within the first generation immigrants, the places of origin tell a lot about their cultural and personality orientation. To have an effective ministry among such cultural plurality is the church's major objective.

Of the 1.96 million Chinese in North America, only 138,800 are Christians attending about 780 Chinese churches. Many of them are serving from one to three cultural groups. Even within those who have a multi-cultural orientation, models of ministry differ from place to place and from denomination to denomination. A brief analysis of different models offers the background to the Chinese church model in San Jose.

The Mono-Ethnic/Multi-Cultural Model is a evolving model over a period of sixteen years. Changes to the organizational structure were made every five years to accommodate numerical growth but the basic philosophy is unchanged. The elements of unity and the elements of diversity are examined with reference to church growth principles. A good church model is not always the final product but one in process. One cannot over emphasize the experimental nature of this model and its adaptation within a particular time and in a particular place.
