Using data from the 1994 Survey on Aging and Intergenerational Relations in Baoding city, this study examines the relationship between the well-being of the elderly and the family network in contemporary urban China.

The elderly's well-being is measured in three dimensions: economic well-being, physical well-being, and psychological well-being. The family network structure is mainly measured by the number of children and their geographic proximity. Factor analysis, Heckman selection model, and hierarchical model are applied in the analysis.

From an age cohort perspective, this study shows that since the younger elderly are higher educated than the older elderly, and they benefit more from the economic reform, they tend to have higher personal income. The economic well-being of the elderly are expected to continue improving.

The results suggest that there is only a marginal effect of the number of children on an elderly's physical well-being, and its effect is mainly mediated through the actual support that the elderly receive. The living arrangements and geographic proximity do not have a significant impact on either physical or psychological well-being. This study further shows that while the family network structure does not affect the financial support to the elderly, it does have an impact on the support in daily activities.

The family has continually been the backbone of old age security in the Chinese society. However, with the continued demographic transformation, the traditional family support system will face great challenge and become short of the capacity to perform its supporting function. Therefore, the public and private providers are increasingly expected to play a more important role in providing support to the elderly that was traditionally provided by families.
