Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Iowa, 2001.
The dissertation examines literary and cinematic embodiment through a group of carefully selected representative texts produced in twentieth-century China. It considers the literary and cinematic representation of the human body as a “social text” revealing issues of class, gender, sexuality, and ethnicity. By tracing the political-ideological imperatives of different periods that determine the body's representation, it maps the cultural practice of meaning production with a close attention to the complexity of form in both literary and filmic significations. The dissertation analyzes how the body-in-text is imagined and lived in key moments of Chinese history, covering an extended period starting with the New Culture Movement up to the nineties, when global capitalism begins to commercialize Chinese culture. It presents a critical reading of “nation and narration,” an intervention into the politics of subaltern, gender, and ethnic representation, and a study of the theme of social alienation.
