Community orientation and the Internet.
- 47 p.
Chair: Fred Zandpour.
Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2000.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether Internet use can be explained by community orientation—that is, one's ties to the community. A questionnaire was completed by undergraduate Internet users at Cal State Fullerton. Data analysis using multiple regression was used on the 250 completed instruments. The results were substantial and consistent in some areas with past research on newspapers: Men were more likely to be affectively attached than women to community. Men were also more likely than women to use the Internet, as were young people. Interestingly, community attachment was significantly associated with online use—but in a negative way, which may speak to the reasons why people use the Internet. Possible explanations for the results and suggestions for further research are discussed.
