Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 1997.
The Florida Atmospheric Mercury Study (FAMS) was initiated in the fall of 1992 to determine the seasonal and geographical variability in the atmospheric deposition of mercury (Hg) throughout Florida. Monthly integrated precipitation samples (wet-only, bulk, and throughfall) and weekly integrated aerosol samples were collected at ten sites in Florida for periods ranging from 2-5 years. The annual rainfall across the state increased by a factor of 2-3 during the summertime (May-October). The concentrations of Hg in wet-only and bulk deposition increased by a factor of 2-4 during the summer months.

The dramatic increases in rainfall and Hg concentration resulted in 5-8 fold increases in Hg deposition during the wet season. The annual volume weighted fluxes ranged from 22 $\pm$ 2 to 25 $\pm$ 3 $\mu

/m$\sp2$/yr across south Florida. The weekly integrated aerosol Hg concentrations were low (1.4 to 8.2 pg/m$\sp3)$ and do not show seasonality. The strong seasonal pattern in deposition, low concentrations of aerosol Hg, and absence of a clear geographical gradient in deposition across south Florida, suggest that processes other than aerosol transport and scavenging govern Hg deposition in south Florida. Model calculations including the seasonal trade wind transport of reactive gaseous Hg species coupled with strong convective thunderstorm activity during the summertime show that Hg deposition in south Florida is probably controlled by regional/hemispheric processes rather than local emission/deposition processes.
