Investigation into the interactions of mercury with biota and the atmosphere.
Quashnick, Jennifer Lynn.
Investigation into the interactions of mercury with biota and the atmosphere.
- 80 p.
Adviser: Mae S. Gustin.
Thesis (M.S.)--University of Nevada, Reno, 2001.
Chapter one investigates the rate constant for the gas phase oxidation of elemental mercury by hydroxyl radicals using elemental mercury, two reference compounds (napthalene and dichlorobenzene) and methyl nitrite (an OH radical precursor) in an irradiated reaction vessel. Results indicate a rate constant of 13.2 (±3.7) × 10<super>−12</super> cm<super> 3</super>/molecule-sec giving mercury a half life of 9.7 hours, although several uncertainties exist. The second chapter examines the effect of water quality parameters and mercury contamination on macroinvertebrate communities in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge in Fallon, NV. Water, sediment, and macroinvertebrates (Hemiptera: Corixidae) were analyzed for total and methyl mercury. Macroinvertebrates were identified and diversity index values assigned to each wetland. Results indicate a negative correlation between diversity and water quality parameters including temperature, specific conductance, pH and methyl mercury. Methyl mercury concentrations in corixid tissues exceeded levels associated with negative effects on reproduction in waterfowl.
