Since 100 BC, Korea has been at the center of East Asian politics. This country with a distinct and separate culture, people and society, was invaded and controlled by the Japanese from 1910–1945. The Japanese occupation tried to change Korea to the vision of the occupiers and eventually eradicate the Korean culture from the world. Confucianism gave the Korean people a basis to resist that eradication.

This project will trace the events of that period and through examples from Confucius's <italic>Analects</italic>, show how the principles of Confucianism helped the people and the culture survive. Only by understanding what grounds and centers the Korean people, what provides them with harmony, will we be able to discover what is the key to peace and stability for Korea.
