Essays on power, knowledge and consciousness.
Hill, Sean Michael.
Essays on power, knowledge and consciousness.
- 163 p.
Adviser: Edward A. Gosselin.
Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2002.
The problem addressed in this thesis is the relation between everyday knowledge and reason, and the manner in which this tension contributes to the cultural and social formation of human self-awareness. Human consciousness is a historical effect of modern social practices and, therefore, cannot be the ground for an understanding of the subtle apparatuses of power.

Using interdisciplinary methods we will attempt to bypass social research techniques that are burdened with circularity. We will avoid grounding this analysis in theoretical models, instead relying on open-ended historiographical methods. Finally, reinterpretations of Spinoza as a materialist and predecessor of critical theory have opened new areas of research into the study of social power. At the core of each of these essays is Spinoza's analysis of the relations between imagination and reason. It is my contention that a study of contemporary power must first problematize human consciousness along these lines.
