Intentionally distorting responses to noncognitive measures has been studied for over 40 years. Little of this research, however, has considered the construct validity of the methods used to measure this distortion, or faking. The most common measures of faking are social desirability scales. Although conclusions regarding faking and its impact in selection settings have been largely based on these scales, it has not yet been determined if these scales are valid measures of faking. In the current study a new method for measuring applicant faking was developed on the basis of theoretical models and previous research. The construct validity of the new measurement approach and social desirability scales was examined using incumbent and applicant validation data for two different jobs. Although the new approach received some construct validity support, the data indicated neither it nor the social desirability scales could be confidently used as measures of applicant faking.
