It is argued that the sculptor translates between experiences of self and other to self. Also, it is argued that a sculpture is a relational entity and vessel in which thought itself can be said to come into being.

The central arguments of the dissertation propose that learning with and through stone is not the transfer of knowledge as content or the teaching of a methodology, but instead assists children and adults to find personal ways of expression.

The research draws upon the ideas of Martin Buber, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and Donald Winnicott whose theories help us to understand the phenomenon of the loss of the self into the other.

To sculpt, to teach, to learn means that the participants in these activities become sensitive to, and develop an affection for, relationships where they receive the other into self as a powerful energy for maturing in life.

A Conversation Between Sculptor and Stone explores the evolving relationship between a sculptor, animated by a biological life and capable of intelligent actions, and a stone, with the potential to embody artistic expression but dormant until an artist decides to set it in a context different from the one nature has intended. This research looks at a self-other relationship where conversation that stimulates creative changed from their original state of being.

The research explores the practical, the existential, and the theoretical dimensions of creating art. It examines the sculpting processes of Isamu Noguchi and the author of this dissertation. The approach and method of this study derives from hermeneutic phenomenology. The description brings to the forefront various energies, conflicts, influences, and life experiences that when combined interact to shape a work of art.

The major thrust of the dissertation examines the process of sculpting from the moment a stone is met, while it is being worked and, even, after a sculpture is finished. It examines the various layers of experiences which bring sculptor and stone into oneness.
