This study analyzes the mass <italic>political education</italic> designed and carried out by the Black Panther Party, an American social protest group existing from 1966 until roughly 1982. Investigating a range of Black Panther institutions and initiatives, including their newspaper, schools, and use of mass media coverage, this inquiry details Panther political education specifics and examines why the group undertook such an instructional campaign. Further, it explores how the Panthers presented their lessons to a vast audience, ranging from members to working class black urbanites to the white establishment, and describes how shifts in educational content reflected changes in the Party's evolving ideology. On one level, this study refashions our historical understanding of this often-mythologized group. More broadly, this inquiry compares Black Panther political instruction to that of other social protest organizations, illuminating the ways education can ignite social change.
