The purpose of this investigation was to explore the journey of an art object, a contemporary photograph by Cindy Sherman, as it moved through the auction process at Sotheby's, New York. Historically, supporting literature on connoisseurship and commerceship indicates that each art object journeys in a routine manner from acquisition to sale within the auction house paradigm.

Two interviews were conducted with five art experts (connoisseurship) and five business experts (commerceship) who interacted with the object on its journey. A collective case study was chosen which used a “Convergence of Multiple Sources of Evidence” methodology. Data collection instruments included: Questionnaires for the Arts Professionals, a Collector Characteristic Checklist, and Written Documentation, and a Log Book; four themes were researched: quality, perception, tension, and contextualization as central to defining the journey of the object at Sotheby's.

Results for the theme of quality, showed that discussion of the provenance of the object was the primary variable in shaping the journey. Connoisseurship was scholarly yet practiced informally. Findings showed that the art and business experts worked as a team towards a mutual goal in which rivalry nurtured competition. Tension, when it existed between the two paradigms, was productive. As it moved sequentially through the beginning, middle, and end of its journey the art object accrued layers of diverse perception as it shifted its context.

It was concluded that, without undervaluing the artistic worth of the art object, it was ultimately a commodity to be sold within the context of art business. It was suggested that there is a need for innovative arts training for a new arts professional who would become involved in educating the new auction consumer. Results support the inclusion of more arts-based knowledge within the auction house domain and more auction-based curriculum within traditional art school settings.
