“The Development of Artists at Rhode Island School of Design” explores the development of college level art students by focusing upon issues related to skill development, visual imagery, identity, the influence of peers, teachers and family, and professional competence and occupational goals.

The research explores the prevailing practices employed in the education of studio art and argues that the plan of study young art students currently follow is based upon models derived from European models. This dissertation then explores the salient issues of growth and development as viewed from the perspective of the field of education in order to examine whether institutions fully empower their students' professional development as artists.

A longitudinal case study was undertaken at Rhode Island School of Design beginning in the Fall of 1994 with incoming freshmen and ending with their graduation in 1998. The group initially comprised of twenty-one students filled out questionnaires, were interviewed, their entry portfolios were duplicated, journals collected, and photographs were taken of students with their work. Analysis of data collected offers a picture of the interweaving of developmental and identity factors in the professional growth of artists.

It is argued that while general positions of development among young college level art students are discernible, when young people engage in creative activities, development occurs in a highly individual and natural manner which lies beyond the linear framework offered by theorists such as Erikson and Perry. It is argued that Gruber and Wallace's network of enterprise affords the holistic framework to contextualize the output of a young artist's life.

It is argued that in order to combat the general sense of isolation and alienation from the world outside of art school, it is beneficial to the artist and compatible with human purpose to encourage students to do fieldwork or to work within the community during their art school education.
