This dissertation establishes the need for critical thinking, and provides a meta-analysis of current studies on critical thinking transfer, including the Harvard, Taba, and Newmann social studies projects. Because the definition of critical thinking is central to its research and dictates possible methods of application, several definitions are considered and one formulated. The historical evolution of critical thinking in the United States, with its European underpinnings, is explored, as well as investigation into variant pedagogies espoused by several academic disciplines.
