Thesis (D.M.A.)--Arizona State University, 2002.
Ever since the Spaniards introduced it during a colonization period that spanned more than three centuries, the guitar has continued to be one of the most popular musical instruments in the Philippines. A considerable number of works by Filipino composers exists for this instrument, most of which are in manuscript form, and are unpublished, unrecorded and rarely performed. Eighteen works by seven different contemporary Filipino composers were chosen for this recording project. Biographical information on Florante Aguilar, Richard Alcoy, Bernardino Custodio, Michael Dadap, Bayani de Leon, Lucrecia Kasilag and Jose Valdez as well as a discussion of the pieces selected for the recording form part of this study. Musical scores of the recorded works are included in the appendix. This research has also produced a comprehensive listing of works for the guitar by twenty-six contemporary Filipino composers. More than ninety pieces for solo guitar, as well as chamber music and other works that include the guitar are listed in the appendix. Information and materials were obtained from composers, guitarists and sources such as articles, books, recordings and performance programs.
