This dissertation takes a spatially informed approach to works set in the Imperial Malay World. The primary texts examined include Max Havelaar (1859) by Multatuli, Lord Jim (1900) by Joseph Conrad, The Ten Thousand Things (1958) by Maria Dermoût, and various works including the Buru Tetrology (1980s) by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The theoretical approach taken in this study builds on concepts produced by Ben Anderson in Imagined Communities (1983) and Henri Lefebvre in The Production of Space (1973).Subjects--Topical Terms:

This work examines the substance from which the nation and the Empire are cast. Abstract space and the different scales produced within it are real, not fictive. They are produced through constant struggle as well as through the various technological advancements and modes of knowing associated with nation-building and Empire.

In both Max Havelaar and The Ten Thousand Things conceived space is represented as having vanquished and contained the experiential spaces of its characters. This is in keeping with the Imperial narrative that depicts the absorption and incorporation of local, “backward” cultures into the global space of the Imperial world. The scale of nation in these narratives is hailed as the most elemental unit into which the world is to be divided, the final resting point toward which all struggle, transformation and advancement lead. Lord Jim demonstrates that this defeat of experience by conceived space is by no means permanent. Written at the height of new liberal policies instituted in the colonies, Lord Jim represents the capacity for experiential space to become reanimated with the broader range of experiences of the European subject as well as the more complex makeup of European societies (the inclusion of different ethnicities as a direct result of Imperialism). Pramoedya's fiction serves to show that with Independence closure to the struggle between experience and conceived space is not achieved. New conflicts and tensions arise along the lines of race, class, and gender. This dissertation relates these tensions to the basic struggle between experiential space and conceived space.

This dissertation demonstrates that the struggle associated with nation-building forms an ongoing, everchanging dynamic that actually shapes society at every level through the production of scaled space. The opposition between domestic and foreign underlies the spatial practice mediating different balances between experience and conceived space. Importantly, the same forces of resistance and struggle that are associated with Independence movements and Empire-building are also producing the other scales of home and local culture.
