Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Hawaii, 2001.
The existing aging and retirement related literature focuses almost exclusively on individual decision-making in the mature industrialized nations. This analysis develops a family-based framework that may be more appropriate to other regions. The work is presented as three separate essays. To begin, the first essay develops a family-based model and an empirical technique for merging data sets in an effort to examine retirement in a newly industrialized nation—Taiwan. The results indicate that family support, health status, and pension programs all influence early retirement.

The second essay points out that in the more mature industrialized nations economic and demographic change have been associated with a weakening of the family support network and the emergence of alternative means of old age support. To date, East Asia remains a clear exception to past patterns. Family transfers continue to play a very large role in caring for older family members in these nations. The key question facing policy-makers and policy-researchers is, can this continue? This analysis examines the influence of both the demographic transition and the economic transition on the future of family support in newly industrialized East Asia. It shows that although family size is shrinking, if present patterns persist, the consumption of the aged with adult children will increase in the future even if they continue to rely solely on the family for support.

The final essay draws on the existing public choice literature and develops a family-based framework for examining future support for public pensions in a hypothetical East Asian nation. The findings show that although the median voter will reject a public pension program, public pressure for the introduction or extension of a public pension program may increase in the near term.
