The aim of this study is to describe contemporary Korean higher education, focusing on perspectives of educational administration, to explore religious and philosophical factors influencing contemporary Korean higher education in terms of educational administrative theory and practice, and to map out reasonable educational administration theory and practice which are suitable for the Korean people.

In order to systematically research this study, the author examines and analyzes historical factors into meaningful chronological and thematic categories through a descriptive content analysis method. The conclusions show that the characteristics of contemporary Korean higher education maintain the hierarchically closed bureaucratic organizational structure and culture with formal authoritarian interaction patterns. Next, the significant religious and philosophical elements influencing contemporary Korean higher education are Buddhism, Confucianism, Shinto-Confucianism, Christianity, and Western thoughts. In particular, the traditional thoughts, Buddhism and Confucianism, generally affect a spiritual side, whereas the grafted ideas, Christianity and American thought, mainly contribute to a formal aspect. Last, based on the foregoing history and changing goals of organizational structures, behavior, and culture, the conclusions suggest that Korean higher education today may be mapped out from the formal system of political and administrative reality to the decentralized natural or open system; from autocratic organizational behavior to democratic organizational behavior; and from traditional organizational culture to contemporary and transplanted ideas.
