This study investigated the effect of hypnotic procedure on subjects accessing personally relevant material as expressed through their emotional response to their simple drawings. The aim was to investigate whether subjects who undergo the hypnotic procedure reveal more awareness of their emotions as expressed in their drawings, than they do in the nonhypnotic condition. This study is based on Fromm's work on ego receptivity to memories, emotions, imagery and thought arising from within and the effect of primary process and secondary process on drawings (Fromm & Nash, 1997).

A total of 34 subjects aged 20 to 60 from collages in the Boston area were involved in the study. Each subject produced two drawings, one with and one without the hypnotic procedure. The researcher administered a common set of questions about the drawings. Dependent variables were (1) an expanded awareness of personally relevant information; and (2) an increased sense of the relevance of this new information. Independent variables were (1) the hypnotic condition in which the drawing was produced; (2) the order, in which the drawing produced was conducted with or without hypnotic process first or second; and (3) hypnotic ability as measured on the HIP. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used to analyze the independent variables.

The Symptoms Check List-90 (SCL-90) was used to eliminate subjects whose emotions might be categorized as clinically disturbed. The Spiegel and Spiegel Hypnotic Induction Profile (1978) was used to establish each subject's hypnotic ability score. Scores were divided into high and low, with a score of 5 used as the cut-off point. There was an equal number of subjects in high and low groups. All subjects made one drawing <italic>in</italic> and one drawing <italic> out</italic> of the hypnotic condition.

The data analysis used was a binary logistical regression, Chi-square, and content-analysis techniques. Upon reviewing their drawing produced in the hypnotic condition, a majority of subjects reported the drawings to be more meaningful and more relevant than those produced in the nonhypnotic condition.

Of the 34 subjects, 24 reported an increased sense of the meaning and relevance of their drawings while 10 reported no significant emotional response to their drawings in the hypnotic condition. Two independent variables: (1) the order the drawings were produced; and (2) hypnotic ability were found not to be statistically significant. The practice effect i.e., the order of whether the hypnotic condition or the nonhypnotic condition was first or second was not statistically significant. Further, hypnotic ability, high or low as measured by the HIP was not a factor in emotional response.
