Specifically, it sought to discover if, and how, the political situation in Israel influences images made by children in their drawings. A secondary objective was to discover if there were differences between the graphic responses of two cultural groups: Israeli-Jewish and Israeli-Arab, 2nd, 4th, and 7th graders, and between girls and boys.

The study was based on a set of drawing tasks administered to two hundred and thirty-seven children, equally divided between Jewish and Arab schools. Nine hundred and forty eight drawings were scored, with reference to twenty types of images, based on a scoring protocol originated in a pilot study carried out in 1995.

Data analysis revealed that the drawings could be grouped within four categories, each reflecting an aspect of the children's personal and general life experiences: The categories included images of everyday life, of politics, of peace and of violence.

The political situation in Israel was found to be an influential factor in the everyday life of children, as revealed in their drawings. The results of the study suggest that Israeli children, of both cultural groups, and of the three age groups, express their thinking in terms of peace and political images, as part of their everyday lives. The Arab children, however, used more images of everyday life in their drawings than did Jewish children, but no difference was revealed across age or gender in either group. The study also identified the dual citizenship experiences of Arab-Israeli children as reflected in drawings of everyday lives, the political situation, and peace process.

Results of the study show that Jewish and Arab children across grades and gender think about the political situation in Israel, and respond to it artistically. The study found that in both communities the family and the educational establishment are influential factors in shaping children's political awareness. Such findings may inspire policy-makers in the Israeli Ministry of Education to show concern with how children learn to give more thought to identify with the State of Israel, as part of the educational process.
